May StewMac self-combust for their irrational discontinuance of Ivoroid.    I've worked with it for more than 35 years and I have not erupted in flames yet!

I know who manufactured the stuff for StewMac, but they won't sell it except in huge amounts. The sheets are 24" x 48" or better, and they try to only sell the whole batch, which is a LOT of them. They're made in a huge layup over 1' thick, and from there the 1/16" or .090" thick slices are cut, and then sold in sheets to places like StewMac. Oh wait, that's right... StewMac isn't buying them anymore... Anyway, then the luthier supply places slice them into strips to sell.

Just an interesting little factoid.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I am having a hard time finding a size I can use for point protectors (Ivoroid). Stewmac used to sell it in little squares roughly 1.5"x1.5"x.240" you just cut a piece off and shape it for the point protector ( for mandos). I guess I'll have to go to bone? Lmii doesn't carry the point protector stuff only the binding. I checked the web and ebay...can't find it!

You might want to try white paper (ivory) micarta. It's a bit tougher to work but should give you what you want. If you want a piece just let me have an address and I'll send it to you.

Dave, have you called Danny Brown at Martin? They sell a lot of stuff that they don't have listed on their web page.

In a pinch, scrpas of ivoroid bindings can be laminated together rather easily and very solidly to make your point protectors.

I use bone for them, and sometimes ebony, even with ivoroid bindings. Ebony looks great, in fact.

Thanks Mario...I tought of bone ...just figured a little too brittle...but definitely do-able. I realy like the ebony idea...that sounds real classy. Thanks for Chimming in!
